Caving Candle

Stuck in Legend of Zelda 2 for NES… cant find the statue needed to get the Jump technique… why???
Hey everyone,
I’m playing Legend of Zelda 2 for NES, and am encountering some weirdness.
I know that in order to get past the cave south of Ruto, you need the “Jump” magic. And in order to get that, you need the trophy/statue in the cave in the desert north of the hyrule castle.
Well, I actually tried going in there to grab it without using the candle, and managed to get that statue. However, I died on my way out (ha ha) and for some reason… whenever I go back… it’s no longer there? And as far as I can see, it’s not in my items either.
I went ahead and got the candle like you’re normally supposed to and went back to the same cave– still not there.
Now I’m pretty sure I need to start the game over again, but I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this, and if they found some workaround to get it back.
Sincerely,
GAC

what an asshole!
If it’s not there, you have it already. Go back to the town and talk to the woman again. She’ll let you in and you’ll get the spell.
This game doesn’t have an “inventory” for items like that. You have an inventory screen with the weapons/items you get from the dungeons, but there is no place where you can see quest items.
