In New Mexico, the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano are called the Land of Fire and Ice

Most of us recall the first Superman movie where he takes Lois Lane to the ice cave. It is a beautiful place with crystal clear ice designs and sculptures. Real ice caves actually do exist. They are the result of melting glaciers. The flow of the water and ice has created natural caves. Some of these ice caves remain untouched while others have become a popular place for exploration.

In New Mexico, the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano are called the Land of Fire and Ice. The trail is paved with wonderful trees. One path leads to the ice cave with the other leads to the volcano. The ice cave is believed to have formed from a lava tube of the volcano. The ice cave features ancient artifacts and artwork created by the Indians.  Be prepared as the temperature stays about 30 degrees in this ice cave.

In Washington, the Big Four Ice Caves are very popular. They are located one mile off the trail that is full of breath taking scenery. This is said to be the deepest ice cave in the world at the lowest part being 1,700 feet underground. However, this cave isn’t always open. Due to avalanches in the extreme winter months and the fact that very little sunlight gets to this cave, the entrance may be covered for months at a time. As time goes on, the shape of the cave allows the entrance to emerge again on its own.

The Big Four Ice Caves aren’t recommended for anyone without exploration experience and good health. Make sure you are prepared for the exploration with the proper clothing and plenty of food. While these caves are exciting, they can be very dangerous.

For thousands of years the ice caves of Northern Neopia have been undisturbed. However, it has been opened up the public and is quickly becoming a very popular tourist attraction.

The formation of ice caves is a natural process that is the result of glaciers as well as accumulated snowfall in certain areas. They are very pretty designs of nature to explore. However, caution should be taken while exploring them, even those that have been turned into major tourist attractions.
