Who should avoid the Road to Hana on Maui, Hawaii?

If you were recommending travelers to visit the Road to Hana…who would you discourage from going there. You know, on cave tours they warn the claustrophobic.

I’m afraid of heights and a little claustrophobic, where I want to know I can get out of a situation if I need to. I hear the Road to Hana is such a beautiful trip, but need a clear idea of what I’m getting into.

Thanks!

The Road to Hana is winding and two-laned. However, there are turnoffs (w/great views and side trips); get the Maui Revealed book which offers great advice about the island and detailed info on this road trip and not-to-miss sites. So, my point is, if at any point you’re not comfortable, you can always turn back. My husband and I went with our two kids (ages 11 & 9 at the time). . . the first part of our trip was great, but towards the afternoon, everyone started getting on each other’s nerves so we didn’t make it to Hana before we decided to turn back but still saw some great sites, grabbed some delicious banana bread from a stand that the book recommended, took a hike to a beach and went swimming under a waterfall.

I wouldn’t say it’s claustrophobic, but the road is curvy. You can just start driving and seeing some sites, and if you’re feeling apprehensive, simply turn the car around and go back. I had heard all these stories about the Road to Hana too, which made me a little apprehensive, but you have to experience it for yourself to know. Next time, we’ll probably drive a little further without making all the stops we already saw and spend more time toward the latter part of the route.
