Iconic Love Story

The tale is heart warming, legendary and the setting is stunning. Based on true events, the story of Captain Corelli has captures the hearts of millions everywhere. Like all the popular love stories the setting is dramatic and simple. During World War 2, the local Doctors daughter of the small Greek Island of Kefalonia, waves goodbye to her fisherman fiancé as he heads out to join the war effort. In the mean time Italian troops settle on the island with Captain Corelli and the consequences are tragic. The tale unfolds as their paths cross and they overcome great obstacles to fall deeply in love despite their unlikely circumstances.

At least they do in the film. In the book the ending is more ‘hard hitting war novel’ than ‘chicken soup for the soul’.

Despite this there is no denying that the location for this truly memorable story could not have been better. The Greek Isle of Kefalonia plays the part of the location for this turbulent story excellently. Ragged cliffs guard the white sands and the pearly blue sea. Since the Hollywood hit, tourism here has boomed and the island has become synonymous with romance and love.

And it is easy to see why. The lush green lands of Kefalonia are the perfect to create your own fairytale love story. The ambience is cool and sophisticated and the striking sunsets create a romantic mood. Teamed up with a low key and natural pace of life it is impossible not to fall deeply and passionately in love, if only with the island.

Hidden coves and under water caves are free and available to be explored. The waters ripple in a crystal clear style so stunning you would be forgiven for thinking it had been filtered. The pastel and white wash buildings compliment the traditional and unspoilt castles and medieval ruins.

The purpose built resort of Lassi is the islands most popular resort and is purpose built around two long stretches of sandy beaches coupled with hidden coves, perfect for a romantic holiday. However if your looking for your postcard destination for a holiday romance then there is no denying the outstanding resort of Fiskardo is perfect.

Allow me to set the scene; after a gentle stroll along the beachfront you stumble upon a small Greek taverna and stop for a spot of breakfast. Once you’ve ate, you can head down to the bay hand in hand and get a small boat for the afternoon. Whilst you explore the surrounding waters you happen across a secluded cove where you can spend the afternoon bobbing in the warm Greek sunshine and no disturbance. When its time to head back you can find yourself a quiet bar, café or even something a little livelier where you can watch the sunset with your loved one with a local wine or a fruity cocktail. You can then wine and dine your night away until the next morning when you romantic break can continue.

The island is almost magical as an untouched taste of the real Greece. Holidays to Kefalonia will absorb in its paradise settings and whisk you off your feet with everything it has to offer.

If you have seen the film or read the book you will have no doubt in your mind where to go for the perfect honeymoon, romantic wedding setting or a cheeky break away for two. Holidays to Kefalonia are unbeatable in the eyes of Cupid.
