Climbing/Rappelling tips?
I have always loved to climb and now am starting to get into rock climbing and rappelling and would like to know if there were any kinds of specific knots i need to know or any specific gear i needed to just start off.
i already know the prusik, figure 8, simple munter mule, klemheist, double fisherman, alpine butterfly, and double overhand stopper knot.
My only equipment is a 224lbs rope, a carabeaner, and a harness.
You will most deffinitely want I belay device to belay your partners (and to rappel), and a few more locking and non locking caribeaners. The non-locking caribeaners can be used for a emergency rappel device called a caribeaner break (look it up). The other locking caribeaners can be used to make anchors, which you will need some decent webbing to construct as well. If you wish to get into rock climbing I suggest you look up leader tie-off. It is a way to hold someone in place if they get seriously injured while you are belaying them. That rescue requires several feet of perlon rope . I recognize most the knots you listed, but I did not see the clove hitch, (very similar to a munter, but holds, unlike the munter) which is very important in climbing. All rock climbing requires a personal anchor, which you can buy ready-made, or create your own out of webbing and a locking caribeaner (ask someone at REI, or another outdoor store) Also it is always good to make sure your harness is approved by USSSA, to make sure it is safe. If you want to be sure you know all the knots involved in rock climbing, try animatedknots.com. If you wish to get more advanced in climbing, you may have to purchase pro (nuts, bolts, etc.) which can be very pricy but also necessary for constructing anchors. And, if you wish to use pro, you will also need a chock pick to remove the pro. As a beginning climber, for the sake of safety use all your gear correctly and wear a helmet ! !
As for tips, I would start rapelling with a fireman’s belay, and as you get better, learn leg wraps and other rapelling techniques. When rapelling down faces the instinct is to not trust your belayer or equipment and stay upright, this is wrong. Lower your hips and keep your legs spread in a nice sturdy stance parallel to your hips. Also, do not hop when rapelling, as many tend to do, it can weaken/destroy your anchor.
As for climbing tips, remember its all about getting yourself just a little higher. Look for ways to raise yourself, even if its only by a few inches, this advantage could get you to the next useful hand/foot hold. If you are doing climbing other than indoor gym, I recommend testing every hand/foot hold before using it to ensure it will hold your weight. As a beginner, start with crack and face climbs with lots of easy holds. As you progress, try friction climbs and more challenging face climbs.
