Why you should be in Batu Caves Malaysia on 20th January 2011?

On 20th January 2011, Hindus of Malaysia will pay homage to hill abode of Lord Muruga at Batu Caves. This day, famously called as Thaipusam attracts almost close to a million hindus and local and foreign tourist. For many Thaipusam is an event not to be missed.

Batu Caves

Hill abodes of Lord Muruga, Batu Caves is located 15Km north of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. The tallest statue of Lord Muruga at the entrance to the hill cave welcomes visitors.

The cave consists of 3 main caves and a number of smaller ones and made of limestones. A climb of 272 steps will lead you to the sacred temple of Lord Murugan.

The limestone hill is said to be 400million years old. in 1891,a trader by the name of Thamboosamy Pilliai was inspired by a “vel” entrance of the main cave  and decided to dedicate a temple to Lord Murugan  within the caves.

Although the hill temple of BatU caves attracts hindu devotees and tourists every day, it is the during the festival of Thaipusam, Batu Caves will assume a carnival atmosphere for 3days, with more then a millions of hindu devotees and onlookers thronging the cave.

Thaipusam is celebrated annually in the 10th month Tamil Calender called thai.Thaipusam is celebrated annually during full moon which falls between 15th January to 15th February. For the year 2011, the festival will be celebrated on the 20th of January 2011.

Vows Fulfilled

Thaipusam is the day, where Lord Murugan is said to have received his spear (vel) from his mother.For Hindu devotees, whose vows has been fulfilled, this is the day for them to pay penance to Lord Muruga. There are various ways to pay the penance. Most of the devotees will carry a “Kavadi”  with ” vel” pierced in their tongue up the 272 steps to pay their penance. With various drum beats resonating around the cave compound the atmosphere at the temple is a site to beholden.

Conclusion

Batu Caves is one of Malaysia most famous tourist attraction that draws many tourist far and wide on a normal day.For many tourist, being in the center of Thaipusam celebration, is memorable life time experience.Each year, the number of tourist arriving to view the festival has been on the climb.
